Catherine Massin performance - visual art - writing – Brussels, Belgium 1956 -2024 While finishing her studies at the Sorbonne (Paris), the French-born Catherine Massin joined as young actress the theatre Labyrinth (1974-1978). She received training in contemporary dance in France and in the USA. Between 1983-1996, she worked as a dancer, choreographer and movement pedagogue in Belgium., her dance company created pieces of innovative movement theatre, performed in Europe. From the 90’s, she created choreographies for the students of the Hoge School voor Dans in Antwerpen. Later, she collaborated with musicians of NASMA group (contemporary music from the XXth century) and started to experiment with the expressive possibilities of oil or acryl painting using the movement of the hand. From 2000 she worked in improvisation joining the performance collective “les Bains Connective “based in Brussel. She created video installations and experimented with body language (improvisation around moving, talking and writing). With Pierre Rubio, she performed in Europe with ‘Conversations’, improvisation score using physical and verbal languages, she collaborated with the writer An Penders and collaborated with Pierre de Lune Association, mixing dance with painting. At the same time, she taught children creative dance and finished her studies in clinical psychology. “I have always been interested in the physical expressions of emotions. About this website. When Catherine was diagnosed with cancer almost four years ago, she asked me to create a website that reflected on her artistic life. We started a basic wireframe but slowly Catherine expressed the desire to expand the site possibilities, specially on the content while she was discovering the magnitude of the artistic volume she produced. From then on, we inventoried performances, performance movies, workshop videos, filmed improvisations and classes, photos, paintings, writings. We framed and edited almost hundred videos, and we have created a series of new movies based on Catherine’s artistic life (Life in Art) and another series of thematic videos (Rooms). The whole process took us almost three years. Day by day, consultations, designing, editing, redesigning, reediting. The whole process was exciting while and despite the disease that continued to take its merciless toll. Catherine’s last creation ended two days before she deceased, confident that finalising the work will succeed the way it was intended. The remaining work was still immense; a certain number of movies still had to be subtitled as those had no direct translation into the movie. Personally, this was the biggest challenge because having to listen to Catherine’s voice while she was not present anymore meant a real burden. As we have discussed a lot the framework of the website it was a relief to start that part of the project a few months ago. Unfortunately, she cannot see it anymore, but I was trying to stay the closest possible to the concept. The result is here, a website with almost the full content of Catherine’s artwork, her vision on life in general and on her personal life, her achievements, her failures ... as she tended to say... la vie ... quoi.
